HSG & Conception Chances

By:
Mark Perloe

Question :

I had an HSG done, and three days later I conceived our son. He is now 18 months old, and we are trying to conceive again. Will I have to have another HSG done, or is there a good chance that my plumbing is good to go?

Margaret

Answer :

A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is an X-ray of the uterus that involves injecting a dye into the uterus and tracking it to see if it flows through the tubes. It can show whether the tubes are open. Studies have suggested that fertility rates may be higher immediately following this procedure. It is impossible to determine whether in your case the HSG resulted in your pregnancy, though.

The fact that you had difficulty achieving a pregnancy the first time does not indicate that you will have problems the next time you try. For women under 35 with no obvious fertility factors, I generally recommend attempting pregnancy for about a year before considering fertility treatment. If however, you are over 35 or a known fertility factor was identified while you were attempting to conceive the first time, you may start evaluation and treatment earlier.
