Summary

The Angiojet is a very small device introduced in 1997 for the dissolving of potentially deadly blood clots in a patient's arteries. The device is often used prior to a balloon angioplasty, or to reopen coronary bypass grafts and stents that have closed or become clogged. The Angiojet is also approved to remove blood clots in clogged arteries outside the heart (peripheral artery disease).

In 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new version of Angiojet. Known as the Angiojet Ultra Thrombectomy System, it is a re-engineered version of the original device. The Ultra system is easier to use and offers the flexibility of a broader range of catheters. It is expected to be released on the market by the summer of 2007.
